April 11, 1862: Promoted to Colonel

April 29 - June 12, 1862: Siege of Corinth

August 14 - October 10, 1862: Confederate Heartland Offensive

November 1862: Commander of one of the Army of Tennessee's Brigades

December 13, 1862: Promoted to Brigadier General

June 24 - July 13, 1863: Tullahoma Campaign

September 19-20, 1863: Battle of Chickamauga

November 25, 1863 Battle of Missionary Ridge - Wounded in the foot and captured, but was quickly exchanged

May 15, 1864: Battle of Resaca and was wounded again

 

June 6, 1864: Promoted to Major General

Advanced to Division Commander in Lieut. Gen. Alexander P. Stewart's Corps receiving a temporary promotion to Major General

November 30, 1864: Battle of Franklin - had two horses shot our from under him. He was badly bruised but returned to duty quickly.

December 15-16, 1864: Battle of Nashville - covered Gen. Hood's retreat after his defeat in the battle

January 1 - April 26, 1865: Carolina's Campaign

April 26, 1865: Surrendered with Gen. Johnston at Bennett Place

May 1, 1865: Paroled in Greensboro, North Carolina

Resumed his law practice

March 9, 1855 - January 24, 1894: Appointed U.S. Senator from Mississippi to fill the vacancy left by Sen. Lucius Q. Lamar

March 4, 1895 - April 21, 1898: U.S. Senator from Mississippi till his death
