May 10, 1861: Resigned his commission in US Army

July 1 - 10 1861: Accepted commission as Lieutenant Colonel (unclear why  negotiations took several months)

Assigned to command the 20th Virginia

July 11, 1861: Battle of Rich Mountain -- Became separated from BGen Garnett's command and not knowing the terrain, surrendered his entire command. Suffered the humiliation of being the first former US Army officer imprisoned in Fort Warren in Boston Harbor.

January 1862: Paroled in Baltimore, MD

January 1862: Promoted to Colonel

January 1862: Served as a military engineer for Gen. Beauregard

Assigned as Chief of Staff to Gen. Edmond Smith

November 7, 1862: Promoted to Brigadier General and assigned a cavalry brigade

December 1862: Battle of Stone's River - cited for poor intelligence gathering and slipshod performance

Early 1863: Directed a Cavalry brigade into Kentucky

March 31, 1863: Lost a skirmish to a much inferior Union force

May 1, 1863: BGen. Wilcox pushed Pegram's force back off the Cumberland River

October 19, 1864: Battle of Cedar Creek

February 6, 1865: Killed at Battle of Hatcher's Run
