Transferred to the lower Shenandoah Valley under the command of Stonewall Jackson

Participated in Gen. Stuart's first ride around the Union Army

September 14, 1862: Battle of South Mountain, was knocked unconscious when a horse fell on him

October 10-12, 1862: Stuart's Chambersburg Raid

Promoted to Brigadier General for his conduct on the Chambersburg Raid

May 1-4, 1863: Battle of Chancellorsville - Stoneman's 1863 Raid

June 9, 1863: Battle of Brandy Station

While recovering at Hickory Hill, was captured and sent to Fort Monroe before being shipped to New York

February 25, 1864: Exchanged for Union Brig. Gen. Neal S. Dow

April 1864: Promoted to Major General

May 5-6, 1864: Battle of the Wilderness

May 5-9, 1864: Battle of Todd's Tavern

May 8-21, 1864: Battle of Spotsylvania Court House

June 25, 1864: Battle of Stauton River Bridge

June 29, 1864: Battle of Reams Station

August 14-20, 1864: 2nd Battle of Deep Bottom

Supported Maj. Gen. Wade Hampton's Beefsteak Raid
