1861: Raised the "McClernand Brigade" in Illinois and on May 17 was commissioned a Brigadier General

November 7, 1861: Battle of Belmont

April 6-7. 1862: Battle of Shiloh

January 11, 1863: Battle of Arkansas Post

May 16, 1863: Battle of Champion Hill

June 18, 1863: Relieved of Command

1864: Reassigned Commander of XIII Corps, Department of the Gulf

November 30, 1864: Resigns due to poor health
