1846: Joined the US Army as a 1st Lieutenant of the Regiment of Mounted Rifles
Mexican-American War
September 8, 1847: Battle of Molino del Rey - wounded and promoted to Captain
Remained in the Army till July 1861, when he joined the Confederate States Army as a major in the Cavalry in the Department of North Carolina
September 1861: Promoted to Colonel
January 1862: Promoted to Brigadier General serving in the Peninsula Campaign
July 1, 1862: Battle of Malvern Hill, was wounded during the battle
November 1862: Promoted to Major General and transferred to Trans-Mississippi Department where he was given command of 12 Texas regiments
His division earned the nickname "Walker's Greyhounds" for their ability to move quickly

Lieut. Gen. E. K. Smith assigned the Greyhounds to Maj. Gen. Richard Taylor's Western Louisiana command. He was given the task of attacking Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's supply line that ran on the west bank of the Mississippi River
June 6, 1863: Battle of Milliken's Ben - This battle was one of the first times an African-American troops engaged in battle
April 8, 1864: Battle of Mansfield
April 30, 1864: Battle of Jenkin's Ferry
August 1864: Given command of his former superior's District of Western Louisiana
By the end of the war, was transferred to command the District of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona
After the war, fled to Mexico
August 1865: Traveled to England where he was joined by his wife
Later served as U.S. Consul in Bogata, Columbia as a Special Commissioner to Pan-American Convention
