1849: Brevet 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd U.S. Dragoons

Assigned to Frontier Duty

1855: Promoted to 1st Lieutenant and assigned to 2nd U.S. Cavalry under Col. Albert Sidney Johnston

1856: Returned to West Point as Instructor of Cavalry Tactics

January 1861: Promoted to Captain

May 30, 1861: Resigned his commission and left West Point

First assignments for the Confederacy was organize a school for cavalry instruction

July 1861: Promoted to Major of 6th Virginia Cavalry

November 1861: Became Colonel of 6th Virginia Cavalry

Served under Gen. A.P. Hill during Stonewall Jackson's Valley Campaign

March - July 1862 - Peninsula Campaign

August 28-30, 1862: Severely wounded in leg during the 2nd Battle of Bull Run

May 1863: Able to resume limited military duties serving as Chief of Bureau of Conscription

February 1864: After being cleared for duty, rejoined the army in Tennessee serving on the court-martial of Lafayette McLaws

Promoted to Major General

May 5-6, 1864: Battle of the Wilderness

May 8-21, 1864: Battle of Spotsylvania Court House

When Gen. Longstreet was wounded, temporarily assumed command of the I Corps. Was later replaced by Maj. Gen. Richard Anderson who had seniority and combat experience

May 31-June 12, 1864: Battle of Cold Harbor

June 9, 1864 - March 28, 1865: Siege of Petersburg

August 16, 1864: Battle of Deep Bottom

April 1865: Surrendered at Appomattox Court House
