1846-1848: Mexican-American War

April 18, 1847: Battle of Cerro Gordo - was brevetted  to Captain for his actions

Continued his frontier services in New Mexico

1855: Promoted to Captain

As war breaks out, is assigned as a Major in the 14th U.S. Infantry

July 21, 1861: 1st Bull Run

September 28, 1861: Promoted to Brigadier General

May 1862: Raised to Division Commander

June 27-28,1862: Battle of Gaines Mill

August 29-30, 1862: 2nd Battle of Bull Run

September 17, 1862: Battle of Antietam

December 13, 1862: 1st Battle of Fredericksburg

November 29, 1862: Promoted to Major General

May 1-4, 1863: Battle of Chancellorsville

June 28, 1863: Assumed command of the V Corps

July 1-3, 1863: Battle of Gettysburg

November 26-December 1863: Mine Run Campaign

When Maj. Gen. Grant reorganized the Army of the Potomac and sent Sykes to the Department of Kansas

October 16, 1863: Promoted to Lieutenant General in the Regular Army

During Price's Raid in 1864, was replaced by Maj. Gen. Blunt

1866: Mustard out of the  Volunteer Service and returned to the Regular Army. Served in the 5th U.S. Infantry

January 12, 1868: Promoted to Colonel and received command of the 20th U.S. Infantry

Commanded a number of duty station from Minnesota to Texas

February 8, 1880: Died while commanding Fort Brown, Texas
