Battle of Seven Pines
New York Times Article

The following is transcribed from the New York Times, dated August 11, 1862:

We publish to-day the official report of Brig.-Gen. H.M. NAGLEE, commanding First Brigade, CASEY's Division, Army of the Potomac, of the part taken by his brigade in the battle of the "Seven Pines," May 31, 1862. It is a straightforward, manly document, in defence of brave men suffering from undeserved censure. Gen. NAGLEE has been at pains to make a most thorough examination into all the facts relating to the conduct of his brigade on that unfortunate day, when Gen. CASEY's Division suffered so severely from the attack of a superior force, and the circumstantial account he gives of their movements during the battle of the Seven Pines, places their reputation beyond a question of doubt. No General in the army has labored more indefatigably than has Gen.NAGLEE to bring his brigade up to the highest point of efficiency, and it is not strange that he should be jealous of its reputation. His statements in regard to its actions form a portion of the history of the Peninsula campaign which cannot be ignored. It is to be regretted that we should be even temporarily deprived of the services of so valuable an officer as Gen. NAGLEE, on account of ill-health, which has compelled him to withdraw for a time from his command.
