Commander of an Army column marching westward into Montana Territory during what is popularly known as the Centennial Campaign of 1876-1877
1877: Went to Canada to negotiate with Sitting Bull
Still in Montana during the Nez Pierce war
1878: Joined Maj. Gen. John Schofield on presidential board to reexamine the conviction by court-martial of Fitz John Porter. The board found the Porter had been unfairly convicted of cowardice and disobediance
1881: Promoted to Maj. Gen. and was given command of the Military Division of the Missouri.
1861: Raised the 2nd Connecticut Infantry Regiment and was appointed Colonel
July 21, 1861: 1st Battle of Bull Run
Regiment transferred to South Carolina
September 13, 1861: Organized an elite and special regiment, 7th Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry
April 1862: Brigadier General of Volunteers and placed in command of Morris Island Division of the X Corps
1863: Heavily involved in siege of operations against Charleston and Morris Island, South Carolina
May 4-16, 1864: Battle of Drewry's Bluff
May 17 - June 14, 1864: Bermuda Hundred Campaign
September 28-30, 1864: Battle of New Market Heights
January 6-15, 1865: 2nd Battle of Fort Fisher
Promoted to Major General for his actions in the Battle of Fort Fisher. Of Volunteers and Brigadier General in the regular army.
